Rolls-Royce wins contract for Maltese propulsion package

Rolls-Royce has secured a contract for a marine propulsion package for the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM).

The propulsion package will power a new Offshore Patrol Vessel being constructed by Italian shipbuilders Cantiere Navale Vittoria. Rolls-Royce will supply PROMAS controllable pitch propellers and rudders, SC722 FCP steering gear, a TT1300 bow thruster, a TT100 stern thruster, Fin Stabilisers, and a touch-screen remote control system.

The 1,800 tonne, 74.8-metre, twin-screw vessel will be used for search-and-rescue missions, helicopter operations, and replenishment-at-sea. Known as P71, the ship will be the largest to be constructed at the Vittoria shipyard and is due to be completed in 2020.

Rolls-Royce Area Sales Manager Lars Johansson said: “This is a significant order from a long-standing customer of Rolls-Royce. Having supplied Cantiere Navale Vittoria with equipment for many of its smaller 40-metre patrol and coastguard vessels for which the yard is noted for, we are delighted to now assist the shipbuilder in meeting market demand for larger vessels.

“Vittoria intends to be a significant player in this market. We are also delighted to further strengthen our cooperation with the Armed Forces of Malta, having assisted them over the years to maintain Kamewa water jets forming part of the propulsion system of two Search and Rescue launches.”

Cantiere Navale Vittoria has said that the systems provided by Rolls-Royce will ensure manoeuvrability and longevity for P71. The ship will be capable of close-range movements and can be operated remotely through the Rolls-Royce CanMan touch joystick, which can be used in all areas of the ship.
