PGA Championship cyber attack: Ransomware on the rise

Last week brought fresh warnings to businesses about the threat from large-scale cyber attacks, as the Professional Golfers’ Association of America was hit with a ransomware attack ahead of its annual championship. It was reported that hackers had managed to gain access to the PGA’s computer systems and were holding files for ransom. With such cyber attacks on the rise, your business needs to be ready to face this growing threat.

Read how to protect your business against ransomware attacks.

What is a ransomware attack?

Hackers have become highly sophisticated in their efforts to steal data from organisations. Ransomware is a form of malware that takes over your computer and then denies you access to information held on it. The hackers only allow you access to your data once more after a ransom for it has been paid.

How does ransomware work?

There are several ways your computer can be compromised by a ransomware attack. One of the most common methods of delivering a virus is by email. Once the spam email is sent and the virus, in document from, is downloaded, the virus takes over the victim’s computer. The hacker now has control over your admin access, including your files. Regaining control is virtually impossible unless the attacker releases control on their side.

How to protect your business against ransomware attacks

With increasing volumes of suspicious emails, protecting your business and customers has never been so important. Implementing simple, yet vital, cyber security measures will help protect you from cyber threats.

Password protection

This may seem obvious, but passwords can be easily compromised. The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) advises using three random words for your password, including numbers, symbols and uppercase characters. This will ensure that your password is strong and hack-proof.

Back up your data

A recent survey found that nearly a quarter of companies that suffer a cyber attack lose significant business opportunities due to lost data. The survey also found that over half of these companies did not have their data backed up. There are three simple rules to follow that will protect and back up your data:

  • Keep at least three copies
  • Keep one copy offsite
  • Store the data in at least two different formats

Cyber Essentials

Cyber Essentials is an accreditation which has been approved by the UK Government. If you are working with the public and/or defence sector it is vital that you invest in this certification as it is mandated by the MOD to bid for MOD contracts.

If you are a defence supplier looking to find out more about Cyber Essentials, download the Scheme Summary for more information.
