Dstl announces free IP opportunities including lower limb protection

Dstl has announced new IP opportunities for free commercial use such as lower limb protection and forensic technology.

The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) has released a new list of free IP (Intellectual Property) for commercial exploitation including lower limb protection from IEDs. Easy Access IP allows low technology readiness ideas to be freed for commercial development in the private sector.

One development being released is a metal ‘cup’ that covers the foot from heel to mid-sole to protect from IEDs. In trials, it has been shown to protect against traumatic amputation and can be worn over the shoe or as an insert.

Dstl hopes that by releasing the technology it can be developed into a low-cost innovation that could provide humanitarian benefit to the civilian and military sector. It is especially useful in areas affected by mines and other explosives.

Andvari is a forensic tool that uses statistics and machine learning to improve the identification of data in digital forensic investigation. A probabilistic framework ‘learns’ which data is of interest to an investigator, saving a significant amount of time compared to a random search.

The technology is applicable to all fields of digital forensics in which metadata is analysed and prioritised, such as law enforcement and defence. Easy Access IP offers certain technologies for free, in combination with a simple licence agreement.

For Dstl the scheme provides a mechanism to release low technical readiness technology to those who may be able to develop it further. By offering the licences for free, Dstl hopes to build stronger relationships within industry and academia and see the technology potentially come to market and create an impact.
