Earlier this week we talked about the amount of cyber crime that has occurred in Scotland, specifically the cyber attacks targeted at councils and health boards.
Overall, 19 out of Scotland’s 32 councils have experienced an attempted or successful attack since 2014. With the threat from cyber crime growing we suggested it appeared likely that the number of public bodies experiencing an attack was only set to grow over time. That indeed appears to have been the case.
A fresh cyber attack on the IT systems of the Scottish Parliament has potentially locked out MSPs and staff from their computers; the situation looks like it might last several days according to officials.
Parliament is working closely with the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) to keep the attack under control, but the incident remains ongoing.

Scottish parliament hack ‘could last days’
A cyberattack on the Scottish parliament’s IT systems could last several days, officials have warned. MSPs and staff were told some may be locked out of their email accounts after hackers launched a “brute force” cyberattack to crack passwords early on Tuesday.
It is still only a few months since the WannaCry cyber attack on the NHS crippled IT systems across the UK with ransomware. Organisations in every sector must be aware that cyber attacks have the power to affect them at any time.
It is not a matter of IF there will be another cyber attack with the impact of WannaCry; it is a matter of WHEN.
What can your organisation do to protect itself from cyber attacks?
Cyber Essentials is a government-backed, industry-supported scheme to help organisations protect themselves against common cyber attacks. Poor cyber security can damage your reputation and cost you business whereas strong cyber security can boost your reputation and win you more business at home and overseas.
Certification with DCI Cyber Essentials can be started today. You can download our Scheme Summary which will provide you with background about the scheme, the scope of the assessment, the assurance framework and the next steps to becoming certified.
Certification to the Government’s Cyber Essentials Scheme is a mandatory requirement for organisations wishing to win business with the MOD, and can help your organisation prepare and defend itself against malicious cyber attacks.
