Defence procurement project to supply new armoured vehicles to the British Army begins

Defence Procurement Minister Stuart Andrew has announced that British suppliers have been given the “green light” to move forward with plans for a new fleet of eight-wheeled armoured vehicles.

New Army vehicle plans

The MOD announced plans to modernise its vehicle fleet and meet the Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV) requirements in March this year.

The British Army plans to purchase over 500 Boxer vehicles. At the DVD2018 showcase in September, one of the biggest land equipment events in the world, the Defence Minister announced that the plans will support at least 1,000 UK jobs. Mr Andrew noted that:

“A new 8×8 armoured vehicle is a key part of our British Army’s future, and today marks a big step towards equipping our soldiers with this brand-new troop carrier.”

Defence procurement opportunity for British suppliers

This is a huge opportunity for defence procurement suppliers. Artec – the consortium which leads on the production of the troop carriers – will soon begin the supplier selection process before returning to the MOD with a formal proposal in 2019.

The Defence Minister acknowledged the work British suppliers are doing to get this project off the ground:

“British companies are stepping up to the plate yet again for a project which could support up to 1,000 jobs across the country, and it is great to give industry the green light to now pull together a full plan of action. I am looking forward to pressing ahead with negotiations in our pursuit of a vehicle which works best for the Army, the taxpayer and British industry.”
