CAE has contracted Rockwell Collins to provide its Panorama collimated display for the CC-295 full-flight simulator (FFS). The move forms part of the Royal Canadian Air Force’s Fixed-Wing Search and Rescue (FWSAR) programme.
Panorama will now be installed onto the CAE built CC-295 FFS to prepare Canadian aircrews for operations in the new fleet of Airbus Defence and Space CC-295 aircraft.
“This is a programme that helps save the lives of thousands of Canadians each year, and working with CAE and Airbus on training will be a critical component for the RCAF’s success,” said Lee Obst, Managing Director of Rockwell Collins Canada. “The configuration flexibility and enhanced realism of the Panorama display will help better prepare pilots for the new platform.”
The simulator itself will be housed within a newly built training centre at 19 Wing Comox, British Columbia. Here, classroom teaching will be available alongside more sophisticated methods of training. Crucially, simulations have been shown to improve efficiency, environmental impact and operations – reducing the use of actual aircraft for training purposes.
“It is essential that our search and rescue crews have the right facilities in which to develop the skills they need to perform their duties safely and effectively,” said Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan. “The construction of this training centre represents another step forward in a key project; supporting our mission of being strong at home, ready to assist in times of natural disaster, to support search and rescue, and to respond to domestic emergencies.”
Panorama is specified for simulators that require a wide field of view, cross-cockpit perspectives and side-by-side training. It supports an unobstructed field of view up to and including 225 degrees horizontal by 60 degrees vertical, making it the perfect choice for critical aircrew training on platforms like the P-8, NH90 helicopter, C-130 and CH-47 Chinook.
