In countries across the world, healthcare sectors have been hit hard by the Coronavirus pandemic. Mid-April, the US death toll from the virus passed 2,000 in a single day.
Defence Online has reported that the US Department of Defense (DoD) will invest more than $133 million to increase US domestic N95 mask production. The organisation wants to produce 39 million masks over the next 90 days.
Fight against Coronavirus
To support the DoD with the production of masks, contracts have been awarded to 3M ($76 million), O&M Halyward ($29 million) and Honeywell ($27.4 million).
The increased production will ensure the US Government gets dedicated long-term industrial capacity to meet the needs of the nation.
Funding for the fight against Coronavirus has been ongoing. At the beginning of March, the US President, Donald Trump, signed off on $8.3bn funding to combat coronavirus. The funding will be allocated to state and local public health systems, hospitals, and medical centres.
