Government offers funding for aerospace design projects

The UK government is offering £150million funding for innovative aerospace design to modernise the industry.

The UK Aerospace Research and Technology (UKART) programme is offering a share of £150million to businesses and research groups who can provide innovative aerospace design ideas. The best projects from the competition can also apply for grant funding.

The UKART is a partnership between government and industry and is managed by the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. Priorities for the competition include whole aircraft design and integration, aerostructures, propulsion technologies, and advanced systems.

Project themes listed in the UK Aerospace Technology Strategy are:

  • improving UK whole-aircraft design and system integration
  • future-proofing advanced systems technologies in the UK – specifically, smart, connected and more electric aircrafts
  • securing the UK’s world-leading position in large, complex aviation structures, particularly wings
  • developing more efficient propulsion technologies, including large turbofans.

The competition opened on March 18 and businesses and organisations could receive up to 70% of their costs for industry-led research and up to 50% for capital investment projects. Entrants must sign up to the ATI framework agreement.

Information on how to apply is detailed on the ATI website. Organisations eligible to express their interest include UK-based businesses, academic organisations, and research and technology groups.
