Cyber Attack on Scottish Parliament

Earlier this week we talked about the amount of cyber crime that has occurred in Scotland, specifically the cyber attacks targeted at councils and health boards.

Overall, 19 out of Scotland’s 32 councils have experienced an attempted or successful attack since 2014. With the threat from cyber crime growing we suggested it appeared likely that the number of public bodies experiencing an attack was only set to grow over time. That indeed appears to have been the case.

A fresh cyber attack on the IT systems of the Scottish Parliament has potentially locked out MSPs and staff from their computers; the situation looks like it might last several days according to officials.

Parliament is working closely with the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) to keep the attack under control, but the incident remains ongoing.

Scottish parliament hack ‘could last days’

A cyberattack on the Scottish parliament’s IT systems could last several days, officials have warned. MSPs and staff were told some may be locked out of their email accounts after hackers launched a “brute force” cyberattack to crack passwords early on Tuesday.

It is still only a few months since the WannaCry cyber attack on the NHS crippled IT systems across the UK with ransomware. Organisations in every sector must be aware that cyber attacks have the power to affect them at any time.

It is not a matter of IF there will be another cyber attack with the impact of WannaCry; it is a matter of WHEN.
