The UK MOD’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) has announced that they are seeking research proposals for innovations to help better understand cyberspace.
The call was launched by the Centre for Defence Enterprise (CDE) at an event in Reading Town Hall, and it is expected that a total of £400,000 will be available for successful research proposals at this initial CDE phase.
Cyber situational awareness strand technical lead Robert Pimblett highlighted the need for new analytical techniques that grasp the scale of cyberspace and the challenges of predicting events.
“The problem is to identify trends and significant events within a data set that is unfeasibly large for human processing but which must ultimately be presented to a decision maker.”
The research proposals hope to discover systems that can process data and autonomously decide which elements are the most relevant to present to the user.
The scope of the research proposals should be extremely wide and should not be limited to, for example, the detection of cyber threats, but instead should aim to provide a better understanding of all of cyberspace and its effects on industry.
Completed submissions should be submitted through CDE’s online portal by no later than 5pm on Monday 29 October 2012.
